MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Democrats won a major election victory in Wisconsin, seized the vacant seat on the state Supreme Court and handed control of the court to Liberals for the first time in 15 years. Milwaukee County Judge Janet Protasiewicz won a heated race for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, beating former state Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly, according to the Associated Press. Campaign spending broke the previous national record for a Supreme Court election. Protasiewicz's victory comes at a crucial moment for the court and the democratic voters who brought it to power.Judges will almost certainly hear opposition to the pre-Civil War abortion ban and, with a Liberal majority, likely to consider a lawsuit that could upend a Republican-drawn map of Wisconsin. As Protasiewicz took the stage to deliver her victory speech, the crowd at the Saint Kate Hotel in downtown Milwaukee erupted and some of her closest supporters danced onstage. At the conclusion of the speech, Protasiewicz was joined onstage by three liberal justices who will soon join the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Born and raised in South Milwaukee, Protasiewicz spent 25 years as a prosecutor in the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office and much of the last decade as a judge. Although she has never promised to rule one way or another on cases going to the Supreme Court, Protasiewicz has been particularly open about her politics during the election campaign. On the subject of abortion, she said she believes women have the right to choose. During the redistribution, he called the Republican-designed state maps "manipulated." , , ahead of next year's presidential election, when Wisconsin, an ever-changing state, will once again play a pivotal role in the race for the White House. When the election cases go to state court, Protasiewicz will be one of seven judges who will have the final say.
